Hensard University, Toru Orua, is planning to honour the legacy of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor.

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West Senatorial Zone and Chancellor of the university, announced on Monday that the institution’s board will soon establish a committee to determine a fitting tribute to the late deputy governor, emphasising the importance of recognising Ewhrudjakpor’s contributions to Bayelsa State and beyond.

During an emotionally charged press conference held Monday at his country home in Toru Orua, Sagbama, Bayelsa State, Senator Dickson expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following Ewhrudjakpor’s recent passing.

The conference, broadcast live on radio and social media, served as both a thank you to those who attended the funeral and a heartfelt tribute to a man Dickson described as a “quintessential good and great man.”

The press conference evolved into a deeply personal reflection on Dickson’s long-standing relationship with the late Deputy Governor, a connection he likened to that between a mentor and mentee.

“I have been heartbroken,” he stated, pausing frequently to compose himself. “E-lawrence, that’s what I call him… this is the second time I’ve had to speak about the loss of someone so close, the first being the eminent Ijaw leader, Pa Edwin Clark. But this… this feels different.”

He described Ewhrudjakpor as a man defined by his trustworthiness, unwavering hard work, and a deep sense of honour.

“His trustworthiness and hard work were what set him apart. One must be honourable,” Dickson emphasised.

“Lawrence was always loyal and supportive, and he never betrayed or backstabbed me. I saw those qualities in him. He had a love for knowledge, coupled with humility.”

Dickson also spoke of the profound shock of the loss, stating that the reality of Ewhrudjakpor’s death didn’t fully sink in until he witnessed the lowering of the coffin into the grave.

Addressing current speculation surrounding the vacant Deputy Governor position, Dickson issued a stern warning to those vying for the role.

Dickson, who recently turned 60, expressed gratitude for his life and the blessings he has received. “I thank God for his mercies,” he said. “It’s time to look back and thank God.”

However, the overriding sentiment of the day was one of profound loss and a commitment to preserving the memory of a man who, according to Dickson, was not just a colleague but a true friend and a pillar of integrity.
