Umuahia was filled with a sense of gratitude at the weekend as Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) Echefulam Louis Anugwa of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officially retired after a distinguished 35-year career. A farewell ceremony was held in his honour, marking the end of an era for the dedicated officer.

ACG Anugwa’s path to the NIS was somewhat unexpected. Originally intending to become an accounting teacher – a passion he still holds dear, having graduated from the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, with an NCE in Accounting/Office Administration – he ultimately “fell in love with the uniform” and devoted his life to serving his country through the Immigration Service.

Joining the NIS as a Senior Inspector of Immigration on 20th March 1991, Anugwa steadily rose through the ranks, culminating in his role as ACG for Planning, Research and Statistics.

Throughout his career, he held key positions including roles in Budget, Revenue, Passport Control (Enugu), Training and Staff Development, and as Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, Lagos.

Known for his commitment to continuous professional development, ACG Anugwa described his life objective as “To be the best I can be at my job and to keep abreast of the changing work environment.” This dedication is reflected in his impressive academic achievements.

He holds a BSc in Business Education, Accounting and Business (University of Calabar), an MSc in Business Administration (Nasarawa State University), an MBA in Accounting (Federal University of Technology, Owerri), and an MA in Peace and Strategic Studies (University of Ilorin).

He is currently completing a PhD at the University of Ilorin, focusing his research on the critical issue of Inter-Agency Rivalry and National Security in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the role of the NIS.

A Fellow of numerous prestigious institutions, including the National Institute for Security Studies, the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, and the Institute of Corporate Administration, ACG Anugwa leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication.

He also intends to revisit his first love – teaching – and explore opportunities in accounting and administration consultancy.
