The road, previously known as Limca Road and connecting Awka Old Road, Nkpor Junction, the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway, and Obosi-Umuoji Road, will now be officially called “Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road”.

Addressing residents during a brief ceremony at the Nkpor Junction end of the road on Wednesday, the Chairman of Idemili North area council, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, explained that the renaming serves as a reminder of Chief Anyaoku’s selfless contributions to the community and aims to inspire young people to strive for excellence.

“Today, we are celebrating Chief Anyaoku by renaming Limca Road to ‘Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road’ because he is a shining example to society. He is highly respected globally for his contributions to our community, nation, and international affairs,” he said.

“We’ve moved beyond celebrating those of questionable character or those who ostentatiously display wealth. The local government embarked on this journey to honour the former Commonwealth Secretary-General so as to inspire future generations to emulate his values, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.

“We will be erecting a prominent sign to clearly indicate the road’s new name. Chief Anyaoku is the first person we are recognising in this way at the local government level, due to his service to the people and the community. This honour from his community is particularly meaningful, given the many global recognitions he has already received.

“While Chief Anyaoku has received numerous international honours, we are honouring this distinguished son of Idemili by naming this road after him as a fitting tribute to his legacy, achievements, and contributions to our communities and the world. We are all incredibly proud of him.”

Also speaking, the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, described Chief Anyaoku, a native of Obosi in the Idemili North council area, as a role model.

Chief Chidoka noted that Chief Anyaoku served as Commonwealth Secretary-General with impeccable integrity, a fact confirmed by the Queen of England herself.

“It is vital that we nurture the next Emeka Anyaoku within this community. Anambra State should be defined by people of integrity, not by those of questionable character. Chief Anyaoku served as Commonwealth Secretary-General without any blemish, to the extent that the Queen of England confirmed his integrity.

“This honour will encourage our youth and children. When they hear the name of the road in the future, they will be reminded of a man from this community who made us proud.
