Pioneering Worship Leader Ron Kenoly Dies At 81

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 3, 2026 – Ron Kenoly, the celebrated American Christian worship leader, singer, and songwriter whose music has touched millions worldwide, has died at the age of 81.

The news was confirmed this morning by his longtime music director, Bruno Miranda, in a heartfelt statement posted to Kenoly’s official Instagram page. While the cause of death was not disclosed, Miranda confirmed Kenoly passed away on February 3, 2026.

Kenoly rose to prominence as a leading voice in contemporary Christian worship, known for anthems like “Lift Him Up,” which propelled his 1992 album to become the fastest-selling worship album of its time. His music became a staple in churches globally, shaping a generation’s understanding of praise and worship.

Miranda, who worked alongside Kenoly for over two decades, described the loss as deeply personal. “This morning, February 3, 2026, we said goodbye to Dr. Ron Kenoly,” the statement read.

He went on to portray Kenoly not just as a mentor but as a “spiritual father,” emphasising his unwavering dedication to his calling.

Miranda highlighted Kenoly’s firm belief that his role wasn’t about performance, but about facilitating a genuine connection with God. “Doc was very intentional about one thing: he was never an artist, never an entertainer.

He was a worship leader,” Miranda wrote. “A worship leader’s calling is not to perform songs, but to lead people into true worship in the presence of a King… guiding them to ‘enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise.’”

He explained that Kenoly consistently taught that worship should be rooted in gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice, rather than focused on personal desires. This philosophy extended beyond the stage, with Kenoly embodying “integrity, humility, and reverence for God” in all aspects of his life.

Born December 6, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Kenoly’s musical journey began after high school with a move to Hollywood, California. He later served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968, honing his skills performing with the cover band, the Mellow Fellows, while touring military bases.

Following his military service, Kenoly dedicated himself to full-time music ministry, ultimately becoming one of the most influential figures in modern Christian music.
