Nigerian Law School Gets First Female Director-General
In a significant move towards gender representation in legal education, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially appointed Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School.
This landmark appointment is set to take effect on January 10, 2026, marking Dr. Odusote as the first woman to lead the institution since its inception in 1962.
Currently serving as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus, Dr. Odusote will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose tenure concludes on January 9, 2026, after eight years in the role.
At 57, Dr. Odusote brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She earned her LL.B. degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988.
Furthering her expertise, she obtained an LL.M. from the same institution, focusing on company and commercial law, and later completed a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, UK, concentrating on Public Law and the administration of justice.
Dr. Odusote began her career at the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and has since taken on various leadership roles, including head of the academic department and director of academics.
Her academic contributions include publications in respected law journals and presentations at numerous legal education conferences, affirming her commitment to advancing legal scholarship.
In her new role as Director-General, Dr. Odusote will oversee the institution’s academic leadership, administrative management, and strategic direction across all campuses.
She will also act as the primary liaison with the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.
This appointment is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing women’s representation in leadership positions within Nigeria’s legal system and academia.
