Police Foil Robbery Attempt In Enugu, Arrest Suspect, Recover Fake Firearm

The Enugu State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing Yuletide security operations with the arrest of a suspected armed robber and the recovery of an imitation firearm and ammunition in Enugu metropolis.

The suspect, identified as Oshim Lambert Chimuanya, 28, was arrested late on Friday, December 13, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m. while allegedly attempting to rob members of the public around the Agric Bank Bus Stop, Independence Layout, Enugu. The arrest followed a swift response to a distress call by operatives attached to the Independence Layout Police Division.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the operatives arrived at the scene and apprehended the suspect in the act of robbing an unsuspecting young man.

Items recovered from the suspect include a revolver imitation (toy) pistol loaded with eight toy bullets, which he allegedly used to intimidate his victim and members of the public.

The police said the suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations, in line with due process.

Commending the operatives for their prompt response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the Command’s resolve to sustain its onslaught against criminal activities, particularly during the festive season. He charged officers and men of the Command to maintain the tempo and ensure that Enugu State remains unsafe for unrepentant criminals.

The police boss also called on residents of the state to continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that would aid in crime prevention and detection, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

The arrest is part of heightened security measures put in place by the Enugu State Police Command to ensure the safety of lives and property during the Yuletide.
