Mr. Vitalismary Unachukwu, a diaspora Nigerian, has taken to social media to call on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step away from politics, insisting the octogenarian’s time has passed and he should retire rather than continue his longstanding pursuit of the presidency.

In a lengthy post on his X handle, Unachukwu argued that Atiku has spent his entire political life chasing the nation’s top job without success and should follow the example of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, under whom he served as deputy, by exiting the stage after two terms as vice president.

“However politically chameleonic Atiku is, or maybe, he should forewarn himself and rest now,” Unachukwu wrote. “He is an octogenarian and has spent his whole life chasing Nigeria’s presidency without success. His political stubbornness will soon hasten his waterloo and ultimate political demise.”

The diaspora commentator said Atiku had refused to read the signs and proceed on retirement, warning that at over 80 years old he is “far spent and done” and no longer offers Nigerians a credible democratic alternative.

Unachukwu also waded into the debate over the convention that politicians should resign their current positions before seeking another office.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for recently asking ministers and political aides to resign if they plan to run for other offices, and argued that the same principle should be binding on all politicians.

“It is a constitutional norm, principle and convention that you cannot indicate interest to run for another political office while sitting tight in your incumbent political position,” he said.

He accused Nigerian politicians of undermining and violating the law with impunity to serve what he called “corrupt, selfish purposes.”

The diaspora figure launched a wider tirade against Nigeria’s ruling class, describing them as “the most wicked, evil, uncultured, corrupt, inhuman and vindictive” compared to their counterparts elsewhere.

He alleged that members of the political elite celebrate while citizens suffer under unspeakable hardships, and that they weaponise poverty to deceive a helpless and desperate populace.

Unachukwu accused the political establishment of stashing national wealth in foreign banks and using their ill-gotten resources to buy their way back into power, all while enjoying protection from security agencies.

He expressed hope that what he described as the current “rotten status quo” would eventually end, calling on ordinary Nigerians to reclaim their primary role as the true sovereigns of democracy in the country.
