NDC Clarifies Reports Of Potential Defections Of Obi, Kwankwaso To The Party
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to clarify reports circulating in the media regarding the potential defection of prominent opposition figures, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, and Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the party.
The clarification comes following a statement issued by Hon. Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the NDC.
Mr. Abdulsalam acknowledged granting a recent interview to a print journalist concerning the possibility of such moves, but stressed that his comments focused on potential scenarios rather than the confirmed intentions.
He expressed concern over what he described as “over-sensational” reporting by some media outlets.
“With the benefit of hindsight and foresight, we do not object to engaging with the press on matters of political importance,” Mr. Abdulsalam stated.
“However, it is vital that any reporting accurately reflects the context of the conversation and the factual basis of the questions and answers.”
The NDC maintains an open-door policy towards politicians from across the political spectrum, describing itself as a “Noah’s Ark” under the leadership of its National Leader, and inviting dissatisfied members of both the ruling and opposition parties to join its ranks.
However, the party insists it does not actively solicit defections, believing politicians should be free to choose their own political affiliation.
“Ab initio – from the beginning – we have been encouraging politicians to consider joining the NDC,” Mr. Abdulsalam explained. “But we respect their right to make their own decisions.”
The NDC confirmed ongoing discussions with figures from various parties, including members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but reiterated its commitment to remaining accessible to anyone seeking to contribute to the nation’s political landscape.
While not ruling out the possibility of Dr. Kwankwaso and Mr. Obi joining the NDC, the party also acknowledged broader talks amongst opposition groups regarding a potential alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
The NDC statement concludes by reaffirming its willingness to consider any potential additions to its membership, while simultaneously emphasising the importance of accurate and responsible reporting on sensitive political matters.
