The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has sharply criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government following a weekend of violence in Plateau, Taraba, and Kaduna States that left dozens dead.

In a press statement released today, the NDC condemned the attacks as evidence of the APC’s “failure” to address the escalating security crisis gripping the nation.

The attacks, which unfolded across the three states, included a particularly brutal incident in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos, Plateau State, where gunmen opened fire on the Gari Ya Waye community, killing approximately 30 people and injuring many more.

Reports indicate local youths are now threatening retaliatory action. Further bloodshed was reported in Kaduna State, where 13 people were killed during a wedding celebration, and in Taraba State, where a policeman, fuel station attendant, and two internally displaced persons (IDPs) were murdered while seeking food.

Hon. Abdulmumini Abdulsalam, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, expressed the party’s deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims and their families, particularly those in Plateau State.

“We mourn with you, and we feel your pains. Your loss is our loss, and your grief is our grief,” Abdulsalam stated.

However, the NDC’s statement quickly pivoted to a scathing indictment of the APC’s handling of the security situation.

The party argues that the repeated attacks demonstrate a clear lack of effective strategy and a failure to deliver on promises made to the Nigerian people.

“It is becoming clearer with each passing day that the APC has no solution to the insecurity in Plateau State, the Middle Belt and in any parts of the country,” the statement read.

The NDC also criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s response to the crises, characterizing his repeated directives to security chiefs as “a now-too-familiar template…sound like a broken record.”

The party further alleges that the federal government’s response is “lethargic” and “dismissive,” even in states governed by APC members.

The statement specifically pointed to Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, claiming his initial efforts to address the violence have “virtually petered out” and devolved into “lip service.”

The NDC concluded by urging the APC government to move beyond rhetoric and implement “concrete” measures to halt the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice, accusing the ruling party of “playing politics with the lives of Nigerians.”
