Obi Mourns Over 35 Nigerian Soldiers Killed In Recent Attacks
Abuja, Nigeria – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of at least 35 Nigerian soldiers this month, condemning the escalating violence against the nation’s armed forces.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi highlighted a recent attack on an army base in Malam-Fatori, Borno State, where approximately 20 soldiers were killed.
He also noted reports of four soldiers killed in a road accident in Lagos.
“Reports indicate that at least 35 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in the line of duty this month alone,” Obi wrote.
“The most devastating… seems to be the terrorist attack on an army base in Malam-Fatori town in Borno state…This is totally condemnable.”
Obi paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, praising their resilience in the face of ongoing insecurity.
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and the Nigerian Army, urging them to remain steadfast in their fight against terrorism.
“I encourage them not to be dispirited by these painful attacks but to strengthen their resolve to stamp out this monster of insecurity from our nation,” he stated.
The former governor’s statement follows a period of heightened concern over security in Nigeria, with several attacks on military personnel reported across the country.
The Malam-Fatori incident, in particular, is believed to be one of the deadliest single attacks on the military in recent months. The details surrounding the Lagos accident are still emerging.
Obi’s post concludes with a prayer for the souls of the deceased soldiers and for strength for their families and the Nigerian Army.
His statement underscores the growing national concern over the escalating violence and the significant losses suffered by the Nigerian military in its ongoing battle against insurgency and other security threats.
