Abuja, Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar launched a blistering attack on President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, accusing him of unchecked ambition and desperation while warning of a looming threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

The statement, issued by Atiku’s Media Adviser Paul Ibe, responds to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s earlier accusation that Atiku’s own political desperation is driving the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) internal strife.

Atiku vehemently denied the APC’s claim, arguing that Tinubu’s actions show a blurring of the lines between state power and personal ambition.

He cited Tinubu’s alleged attempts to consolidate power through manipulation of key institutions, such as the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Atiku pointed to a recent civil society conference where he voiced concerns about the APC’s growing monopoly on power and its undermining of opposition parties.

Instead of engaging in substantive dialogue, Atiku alleges, the APC resorted to personal attacks.

“If there is any political figure in Nigeria who truly embodies the essence of desperation, it is none other than President Tinubu himself,” the statement read.

Atiku also accused Tinubu of using calculated strategies to cripple the opposition, warning that this poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.

The statement cited several instances in which Atiku claimed his earlier warnings were prescient, including the alleged packing of INEC with APC loyalists, the awarding of lucrative contracts to companies with ties to the President’s family, and the use of treason charges against protesters.

He also claims that opposition parties are being infiltrated by “fifth columnists” loyal to the president.

Atiku’s statement depicts a presidency consolidating power at the expense of democratic principles, undermining institutional independence, and suppressing dissent.

He concluded with a stark admonition to the ruling party to confront its own “desperation,” which he claims is reflected in its actions and ambitions.

The statement leaves little doubt about the deep political chasm that currently exists between Nigeria’s two major parties.
