NDDC Emphasises Education’s Crucial Role In Age of AI
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its commitment to supporting education, highlighting its vital role in individual and societal growth, especially in the face of rapid technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Speaking at sensitisation rallies held at Stella Maris College and St. Mary’s Model School in Port Harcourt, NDDC Director of Education, Dr. Awele Chukwudifu, emphasised the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”
According to Seledi Thompson-Wakama Director, Corporate Affairs NDDC, she stressed the importance of equipping individuals to understand and navigate the evolving technological landscape.
Dr. Chukwudifu noted the blurring lines between human intention and machine-driven actions in an increasingly AI-powered world, posing critical questions about maintaining human control and initiative.
At Stella Maris College, Principal Rev. Fr. Magnus Anyanugo expressed gratitude for the NDDC’s sensitisation efforts, acknowledging the benefits and risks associated with AI.
He commended the Commission for its ongoing support of the school, citing recent projects such as the installation of solar street lights and sponsorship of the New WW White Football Tournament.
He echoed concerns about the potential misalignment of human intention and AI-driven impacts.
Similarly, at St. Mary’s Model School, Headmistress Rev. Sister Chimezie Amarachi highlighted the need to ensure humanity retains control over development and governance in the age of AI.
She underscored the irreplaceable role of human elements in learning and emphasized the foundational importance of education for lasting peace.
The NDDC’s commitment to education underscores its belief in its power as a building block for individual potential and societal progress.
The sensitisation rallies served as a timely reminder of the need to adapt educational strategies to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
