Nigeria, Egypt Forge ‘Comprehensive Partnership,’ Boost Cooperation Across Sectors

Cairo, Egypt – Nigeria and Egypt have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a “Comprehensive Partnership,” with a focus on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, officials announced after the third round of political consultations in Cairo.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar led a delegation to Egypt, which included Ministers of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Security.

The agreement represents a significant deepening of ties between the two African giants, encompassing a wide range of cooperation.

Both countries agreed to strengthen regional and international coordination, particularly the African Union’s role in addressing continental challenges and achieving Agenda 2063 goals.

This includes a shared commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and conflict resolution via peacebuilding and sustainable development initiatives.

Recognising the common threat of terrorism and extremism, Nigeria and Egypt agreed to strengthen security cooperation, including sharing counter-terrorism expertise.

The ministers also emphasised the potential for significant economic growth from increased bilateral cooperation.

This will require both public and private sector participation in critical sectors such as agriculture, energy, telecommunications, and infrastructure.

A key development is the planned formation of a Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce by the end of 2025, with a formal launch scheduled for the next round of ministerial consultations in Abuja in 2026.

This initiative aims to increase trade and investment between the two countries. Facilitating people-to-people connections is also important.

The ministers praised recent agreements on visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders and adjustments to visa fees for citizens of both countries.

The Joint Committee’s next ministerial session is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, emphasising the continued commitment to strengthening this newly elevated Comprehensive Partnership.
