Borno State Launches Massive Free Eye Surgery Camp For 10,000 Residents
Maiduguri – Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has announced the launch of a large-scale free eye surgery camp aimed at providing much-needed medical care to 10,000 residents suffering from various visual impairments, primarily cataracts.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Borno State Government and Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, will offer free surgeries and post-operative care to those in need.
Initially planned to benefit 1,000 people, the program was significantly expanded following an overwhelming response and the governor’s observation of the extensive need.
“Many have not received medical attention in over two years because of the cost of operation,” Governor Zulum stated on Monday during the official launch of the program.
Senator Ndume provided funding to cover the surgery costs for 500 patients as part of the initial phase.
The 10,000 surgeries will be distributed across the state: 4,000 in Maiduguri, 3,000 in Southern Borno, and 3,000 in Northern Borno.
Furthermore, Governor Zulum has approved a N50,000 cash grant for each patient who undergoes cataract surgery to assist with post-operative care and medication.
Governor Zulum expressed profound gratitude to Senator Ndume and other stakeholders involved, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the healthcare needs of Borno State residents.
“Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our citizens,” he concluded. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of Borno residents struggling with impaired vision.
