Nigeria Takes Preemptive Measures Against New COVID-19 Variant XEC
Abuja, Nigeria – The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has announced proactive measures to prevent the spread of a new COVID-19 variant, XEC, into Nigeria.
While no cases have been confirmed within the country, the NBMA is working with various stakeholders to implement heightened surveillance and strengthen existing public health strategies.
In a statement released Monday, NBMA spokesperson Gloria Ogbaki emphasised the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
The measures include intensified screening at all points of entry, including borders and airports, to rapidly detect any potential cases of the XEC variant.
The agency is also reinforcing existing preventative measures, urging citizens to continue practising good hygiene, maintaining social distancing where possible, and ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces.
The NBMA strongly recommends vaccination and booster shots for all eligible individuals.
“Vaccination remains one of the most effective means of preventing severe illness and complications from COVID-19,” the statement read. Citizens are also advised to monitor themselves for symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of taste or smell, seeking immediate medical attention if any are present. Full cooperation with health authorities in case of suspected or confirmed infections is also requested.
The NBMA stressed the importance of relying on trusted sources for information, cautioning against misinformation that could jeopardize public health efforts.
The agency reiterated its commitment to providing regular updates and called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and adhere to public health guidelines.
Further information can be found on the NBMA’s official website (www.nbma.gov.ng) and social media channels.
The agency’s proactive approach aims to ensure Nigeria remains protected from this emerging biosecurity threat.
