Obi Advocates For Public Hearings On Proposed Tax Reforms
Abuja, Nigeria – Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged the Nigerian government to hold public hearings before implementing any significant tax reforms.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi stressed the critical need for robust public debate and engagement in the policymaking process.
Obi argued that tax reform is essential but cautioned against rushing the process.
He emphasised that such a significant undertaking demands extensive deliberation and careful consideration of its impact on all Nigerians and all regions of the country.
He stated that focusing solely on increased government revenue is insufficient, and the overall impact on the nation’s sustainability must be prioritised.
“A public hearing on tax reform is essential,” Obi wrote. “It allows Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully, building public trust and ensuring inclusivity in policymaking. Matters of this magnitude should never be rushed.”
The former Anambra State governor highlighted the importance of securing public buy-in and sensitizing the population about any proposed changes.
He believes that transparency, deliberation, and public engagement are fundamental to building a participatory democracy and that trust and legitimacy are the foundations of effective governance.
Without these, he warned, even well-intentioned reforms may fail.
Obi concluded his statement with his signature campaign slogan: “A new Nigeria is POssible!”
His call for public hearings underscores his commitment to transparent and inclusive governance and reflects a broader concern amongst some Nigerians about the potential impact of sweeping tax reforms without adequate public consultation.
