Bayelsa NGOs Launch GBV Awareness Campaign In Opolo Community

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have collaborated to raise awareness in the Opolo community of Bayelsa State as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The campaign, spearheaded by Starrz Safety Initiative in collaboration with Carlrose Education Foundation and other civil society groups, focused on empowering women to speak out against violence and seek help.

The event, held yesterday, highlighted the pervasive nature of GBV affecting women and girls globally.

Mrs. Mary Accra Bekeowei, Executive Director of Starrz Initiative, emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to end violence against women.

She urged women to break the silence surrounding domestic abuse and protect their children from harm.

“Many women are suffering in silence,” she stated, “They should speak up and not die in silence.”

The campaign addressed various forms of violence, including physical, emotional, and psychological abuse.

Mrs. Tari Amananagha, State Officer for Connected Development (CODE), explained the detrimental impact of GBV on women’s health and well-being, urging victims to report abuse to the appropriate authorities.

Beyond GBV, the event also addressed other health concerns. Nurse Deghilipulu Ubodiom from Ogoin Development Initiative stressed the importance of regular blood pressure checks to prevent avoidable deaths, recommending dietary changes for older women.

Meanwhile, Lady Eunice Nnachi from Women Organized for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN) announced the availability of the new malaria vaccine for children aged 0-59 months, encouraging mothers to vaccinate their children.

The campaign culminated in free blood pressure and sugar level tests for the women of the Opolo market.

Mrs. Jane Izon, Public Relations Officer of Starrz Initiative, concluded by emphasising the importance of women supporting each other, stating that “the progress of one woman represents the progress of all women.”
