Abuja, Nigeria – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, has welcomed the reopening of the Port Harcourt refinery, praising the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for fulfilling a long-standing promise to revamp the facility.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi stated his congratulations, highlighting the refinery’s 60,000 barrels-per-day capacity and the projected daily distribution of refined products via approximately 200 trucks.

The news marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address its crippling fuel shortages and reliance on imported petroleum products.

The refinery’s return to operation is expected to significantly impact fuel prices at the pump, potentially easing the burden on consumers who have endured years of high fuel costs and frequent scarcity.

“Nigerians now await the corresponding impact and benefits on pump prices and the overall economy,” Obi noted in his statement.

He further pointed to the promising news regarding the revival of the Kaduna refinery, anticipating positive effects on productivity, transportation, and overall economic alleviation across the country.

While acknowledging these developments as positive steps, Obi emphasised the crucial need for transparency within the NNPC’s operations.

He stressed the importance of Nigerians receiving clear and accountable information regarding the management of the nation’s oil resources.

This sentiment echoes widespread public concerns about the NNPC’s financial practices and the equitable distribution of the nation’s oil wealth.

Analysts across the country have offered mixed reactions. Dr. Adebayo Adeyemi, an energy economist at the University of Lagos, commented, “The reopening is undoubtedly a significant achievement. However, the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the refinery remain key concerns.
“We need to see sustained production at this capacity, coupled with effective maintenance to prevent future shutdowns.”

Similarly, Aisha Musa, a representative of the Consumers Protection Council, emphasised the need for Obi’s call for transparency to be answered.

“The reduction in fuel prices must be tangible and felt by ordinary Nigerians. We need robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure the benefits reach the intended recipients and aren’t swallowed up by systemic inefficiencies or corruption.”

Despite the positive news, several challenges persist. Concerns remain about the refinery’s long-term operational capacity, the potential for maintenance issues, and the need for continuous investment in upgrading the facilities to meet evolving global standards.

The full economic impact on pump prices will also depend on several factors, including global crude oil prices and government policies.

The NNPC has yet to release an official statement detailing the cost of the refinery’s refurbishment, the projected production costs, and a comprehensive plan for ensuring transparency in its operations.

This lack of detail has fueled calls for greater accountability from various civil society organisations and opposition parties.

The coming weeks will be crucial in observing the actual impact of the refinery’s reopening on the Nigerian economy and in gauging the government’s response to calls for greater transparency.
