Nbawsi, Abia State – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex C. Otti, on Monday officially commenced the reconstruction of the Ntigha-Nbawsi-Umuala road, marking a significant step in his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic empowerment.

The 11.45-kilometer road project, expected to be completed within 12 months, is viewed as a catalyst for economic growth in the Isialangwa region.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at Nbawsi Central School, Governor Otti emphasised his administration’s focus on dismantling barriers to the productivity of Abians.

He highlighted the hardworking nature of the populace and lamented the decades of neglect that left the state’s road network in disrepair, stifling economic activity and contributing to social ills.

“Our foray into politics was a practical rejection of the ineptitude of the old order,” Governor Otti stated.

“We promised to do things differently, to solve socio-economic problems and support the daily endeavours of our people by removing the obstacles that perennially inhibited performance.”

The Governor underscored the significance of the Ntigha-Nbawsi-Umuala road project, not merely as a road construction initiative, but as a symbol of his administration’s determination to redress past injustices.

He pointed out that the project’s completion will revitalise local economies along the corridor, creating jobs in agriculture, food processing, hospitality, retail, and real estate.

The project is strategically linked to other ongoing developments in the region, including the proposed Abia Airport at Nsulu, the redevelopment of the Nsulu Games Village, and the refurbishment of numerous educational and health facilities.

The Governor outlined a vision to create new urban centres outside Aba and Umuahia, leveraging Isialangwa’s strategic location.

“This grand design is to make the most of the locational advantage… to connect cities and towns, ultimately creating a long stretch of organised and secured urban communities,” he explained.

Governor Otti also announced an extension of the road project to encompass the compound of the late Senator Jaja Anucha Wachukwu, a prominent figure from the community, as part of ongoing efforts to honour his legacy.

He reiterated his commitment to a holistic development approach, aiming to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas and to attract both domestic and foreign investment.
In a welcome address delivered by Hon. Chief Dr. Friday Onukwue, Chairman of the Oha Nsulu Unity Forum (ONUF), echoed the community’s gratitude for the project and highlighted the significance of the road for Nsulu Clan.

While expressing appreciation, Onukwue also submitted a list of additional road projects and the revitalisation of underutilised revenue-generating ventures within the clan, requesting further government intervention.

The event was well-attended by community leaders, government officials, and residents, underscoring the widespread anticipation and support for the project.

The contractor has assured timely completion, adhering to the highest standards of quality and adhering to the project specifications.
