Abuja, Nigeria – The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has vehemently denied allegations of negligence and compromise leveled against it by several non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

In a press briefing on Friday, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer (DG/CEO), Dr. Yemisi Asagbra, dismissed the claims as misleading and lacking credible scientific evidence.

Dr. Asagbra challenged the NGOs to provide verifiable scientific data to support their accusations. She emphasized the NBMA’s commitment to sound scientific research and adherence to internationally recognised protocols, particularly those outlined in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which has over 180 signatory parties.

“Our mandate is clear: to protect the health of Nigerians and the environment,” she stated, adding that the agency would not compromise its integrity.

She expressed confidence that the agency’s procedures meet global standards and that it is a leader in effective biosafety regulation across Africa.

Addressing the source of the allegations, Dr. Asagbra suggested a possible connection to the NGOs’ past attempts to secure board representation.

She explained that the NBMA often relies on information provided by the Nigeria Customs Service, acknowledging that this process can be challenging.
