NSCDC Cracks Down On Vandalism, Arrests 9 Suspects In Abuja

Abuja, THE NEWSHAUS  – In a decisive blow against the rampant vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended nine individuals responsible for a series of destructive acts.

The arrests, announced by the FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu, mark a significant step in the fight against a growing threat to public safety and essential services.

“These arrests were necessitated by the need to preserve the integrity of our critical national assets and infrastructure,” emphasized Commandant Odumosu during a press briefing where the suspects and recovered exhibits were paraded.

The apprehended individuals were divided into two groups: four individuals directly involved in the acts of vandalism and five who acted as buyers of the stolen assets.

Among those arrested for vandalism were:

Abdulahi Sani (24): Caught red-handed dismantling and vandalizing streetlight armoured cables near the Yoruba mosque in Utako.
Ishaku Toma (32): Arrested for using a heavy rock to break and steal reinforcing iron rods from bridge pavements along the Kado/Galadimawa road.
Abubakar Habibu (22): Apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday while digging to unearth and steal streetlight armoured cables around the Mabushi Bridge.

Further investigation led to the arrest of five individuals suspected of purchasing the stolen assets:

Auwal Ibrahim (35)
Abubakar Ashamu (25)
Yusuf Isah (34)
Salisu Umar (30)
Odinaka Chukwu (51)

Their arrest exposes the network fueling this criminal enterprise, with stolen public assets being sold for profit.

The NSCDC presented to the press various recovered exhibits, including dismantled streetlight armored cables, reinforciarmoured rods, and two Base Transceiver Station (BTS) cabinets stolen from the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Commandant Odumosu emphasized the proactive strategies employed by the NSCDC FCT Command to combat vandalism. These include intensified patrols and the deployment of special units dedicated to apprehending those involved in these illegal activities.

“This parade is a testament to the effectiveness of our proactive strategies,” declared Commandant Odumosu. “We are sending a stern warning to vandals, scavengers, and other criminals that vandalism will not be tolerated within our jurisdiction.”

Commandant Odumosu urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to vandalism to the authorities. He stressed the importance of collective effort in protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the safety and security of the FCT.
