NELFUND CEO Assures Inclusivity in Student Loan Scheme Amidst Discrimination Concerns
ABUJA, THE NEWSHAUS – The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, has vehemently denied any discriminatory practices in the newly launched student loan scheme, assuring the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships, and Higher Education Financing that the programme is inclusive for all Nigerians.
During a maiden meeting with the Committee on Wednesday, Sawyerr emphasised that the scheme is designed to provide equal access to education for all Nigerians, contrary to allegations of discrimination and tribalism, regardless of their location, background, or socio-economic status.
He stated that NELFUND has been proactively reaching out to traditionally marginalised communities, particularly in the South East, to bridge the educational gap and ensure equitable access.
Sawyerr highlighted the impressive surge in applications, exceeding 350,000, and the disbursement of over N10 billion in loans. He also revealed that NELFUND is committed to further supporting beneficiaries with an additional N90 billion in tuition fees and stipends.
He emphasized the importance of tackling barriers to girl-child education, recognising its crucial role in the nation’s development.
“This initiative is not merely a short-term palliative but a comprehensive solution aimed at fostering stability and growth in Nigeria’s diverse landscape,” Sawyerr stated.
The CEO also highlighted the program’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” noting that it is an investment in Nigeria’s future and a crucial step towards securing the future of millions of young Nigerians.
However, concerns regarding the scheme’s fairness and accessibility remain. While Sawyerr insists on inclusivity, the Committee expressed concerns about the Fund’s ability to manage the program and deliver on its promises.
The Committee, chaired by Hon. Gboyega Isiaka, reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency.
“We want to be able to tell ourselves where will NELFUND be within the next three to five years?
How is it going to get there? And what are the issues that we need to address in order for them to get there?” Isiaka stated.
The Committee’s focus on oversight and accountability, coupled with the CEO’s assurances of inclusivity, sets the stage for a collaborative effort to ensure the successful implementation of the student loan scheme.
Moving forward, NELFUND will be working closely with the National Assembly to sensitise lawmakers and ensure effective engagement with all stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcomes for Nigerian students.
The upcoming retreat for the joint committee in November is expected to be a key milestone in strengthening this collaboration and building a student loan system that serves the interests of all Nigerians.
