UK, Nigeria Team Up To Curb Drug Trafficking, Yielding Positive Results, Says Home Office

Abuja, THE NEWSHAUS – The United Kingdom Home Office International Operations (HOIO) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria have announced a renewed Memorandum of Understanding, signifying a continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region.

The partnership, according to HOIO Head Victoria Pullen, has yielded positive results, evident in the NDLEA’s recent successes in interdicting illicit drugs.

“The issue of drug trafficking is a huge global issue, and like many big challenges, it takes a huge global effort to counter that,” stated Pullen.

“The cooperation is working exceptionally well, and we are currently enjoying working with your team on those successes.”

Pullen highlighted the recent commissioning of the NDLEA Marine Command Headquarters, built and donated by the UK government in Lagos, as a significant marker in their collaboration.

“This investment will bring significant benefits to Nigeria by being able to stop those drugs from permeating your society, and also in the global space,” she added.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), echoed the sentiment, expressing appreciation for the UK government’s support.

  “We have enjoyed an increasing partnership with the Home Office International Operations,” he stated.

“Among our international partners, HOIO is one of our major partners whose contributions immeasurably enhance the capacity of NDLEA.”

Marwa cited the significant successes achieved by the NDLEA over the past three years, including over 52,000 arrests, seizures of over 8,000 tons of illicit substances, and convictions exceeding 9,000.

He attributed these successes partly to the UK’s support and highlighted the need for continued collaboration, particularly in intelligence sharing.

The renewed MoU signifies a strengthened partnership between the UK and Nigeria, demonstrating their commitment to combating drug trafficking and fostering safer communities.
