Nigeria Rallies Support For EFCC’s Cybercrime War

Abuja, THE NEWSHAUS –  A one-day National Cybercrime Prevention Summit held in Abuja on Tuesday resulted in a united front against Nigeria’s growing cybercrime threat.

  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) organised the summit with support from the EU-funded RoLAC II Programme, which brought together key stakeholders such as Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, state governors, religious and traditional leaders, and representatives from the International IDEA.

The event, titled Alternative to Cybercrimes: Optimising Cyber Skills for National Development, aimed to find solutions to the growing cybercrime threat.

Speakers emphasised the importance of working together to combat these crimes and provide young people with alternative pathways to success.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended the EFCC and other anti-crime agencies for their efforts in deterring youth involvement in crime.

He pledged the support of the governors in combating cybercrime and building a consensus on cultural values that promote honesty and integrity.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State also expressed unwavering support for the EFCC, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency in leadership.

He stressed that cybercrime was a national issue that required a collaborative response.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede highlighted the gravity of the cybercrime threat, stating that it poses significant risks to the nation’s economic stability and reputation.

He cited alarming global statistics, including the projected $10.5 trillion loss to cybercrime by 2025.

Olukoyede emphasised that the EFCC was not simply focused on prosecution, but on exploring alternatives for young people with tech skills and providing them with legitimate opportunities for wealth creation.

In her keynote address, Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasised that cybercrime is a national emergency, affecting individuals, businesses, and the very fabric of society.

She called for a multifaceted approach involving all stakeholders, including parents, educators, religious leaders, and the private sector, to combat the growing threat and promote a culture of hard work and honesty among youth.

  • Focus on Alternative Pathways for Youth: The summit highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young people with tech skills, directing their talents towards legitimate and productive ventures.

The summit concluded with a strong message of unity and commitment to tackle cybercrime in Nigeria.
