Bayelsa State To Host 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics

Yenagoa, THE NEWSHAUS – The 3rd edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics is set to take place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from November 3rd to 10th, 2024.
The event, organized by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government, aims to boost the morale of Nigerian wrestlers following the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
Over 800 athletes and 200 officials from across Nigeria are expected to participate in the competition, with 25 states already confirming their attendance.
Military and para-military organizations, as well as 15 wrestling clubs, are also set to compete.
Dr Daniel Igali, President of the NWF and a former Olympic and Commonwealth gold medalist, highlighted the significance of the event.
“This is one of the longest-running championships in the country, and we’re expecting a high level of competition.
“Bayelsa State has a rich history of success in wrestling, with numerous African and Commonwealth champions hailing from the state.
” This event is a testament to Governor Douye Diri’s commitment to supporting sports development in Bayelsa.”
Igali emphasised the need for a strong showing after the recent Olympics, stating, “We need to start fresh and build towards the next major competitions.”
He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of Governor Diri and highlighted the state’s exceptional wrestling legacy, boasting 82 African champions, 138 medals at the African level, four Commonwealth gold medals, and an Olympic silver medal.
High-ranking officials, including the Comptroller General of Customs and the Chief of Defence Staff, have confirmed their attendance at the event.
The Minister of Sports is also expected to be present. The competition itself will run from November 5th to 9th, 2024.
