Cuba Seeks To Deepen Ties With Nigeria, Celebrates 50 Years Of Friendship
Abuja, THE NEWSHAUS – The government of Cuba has expressed its desire to strengthen bilateral relations with Nigeria, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, highlighted this commitment during a celebration of the anniversary and the Day of Cuban Culture in Abuja.
Palmero emphasised that Cuba is not only seeking to maintain but also enhance and develop the relationship forged over the last half-century.
She cited the significant increase in economic and commercial exchanges in recent years, with both countries signing numerous Memoranda of Understanding across key sectors like health, education, agriculture, and energy.
“The exchange between our private sectors is expanding, opening new opportunities and possibilities for cooperation,” said Palmero.
She also underscored the importance of the educational exchange program, with over 400 Nigerian students currently studying various subjects, primarily medical sciences, at Cuban universities.
“These ties are based on mutual solidarity,” she emphasised.
Palmero acknowledged Nigeria’s support for Cuba’s position on the US economic embargo, particularly commending former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent letter to President Biden urging the removal of Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
She also praised Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka and other supporters for their advocacy against the embargo.
“We thank the solidarity movement with Cuba in Nigeria,” she stated, acknowledging the contributions of trade unions and individuals in promoting Cuban interests.
Representing the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Janet Olisa highlighted the shared values that underpin the relationship between both countries.
She expressed appreciation for Cuba’s longstanding support of Nigerian students and diplomats, particularly in the field of medicine and language training.
“The spirit of cooperation and friendship definitely defines our bilateral relations over the years,” Olisa said.
“We are hoping that in the next 50 years, our business community will thrive and there will be more interaction in that aspect.”
The event, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the Day of Cuban Culture, served as a platform to reaffirm the commitment of both countries to strengthening their partnership for mutual benefit.
