Peter Obi Clarifies Comments On General Gowon, Emphasises Forgiveness, Focus On Future
ABUJA, THE NEWSHAUS – The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has issued a clarification regarding comments he made at the 90th birthday celebration of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, which sparked controversy and criticism.
Obi’s aide, Dr. Moses Paul (Dr. Mo), shared Obi’s response on his verified X handle. Obi stressed that his remarks focused on Gowon’s post-presidency life and his “remarkable ability to remain prayerful and steadfast in his commitment to Nigeria,” not the events of the Biafran War.
“My comment today, however, was about General Gowon’s removal from office and the grace with which he has handled those difficult events. It wasn’t about the war itself,” Obi stated.
Obi acknowledged the pain and loss experienced by many during the war, including his own family.
He highlighted his father’s business loss during the period and subsequent passing, a “deep personal loss” for him.
Obi emphasised his deep respect for Ikemba Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the leader of Biafra, and his commitment to seeing a unified and prosperous future for Nigeria.
“Mr. @PeterObi’s commitment goes beyond personal ties; he is determined to see a future that works for everyone.
“His vision for Nigeria is one of unity and progress, where the mistakes of the past do not hold us back or divide us,” Dr. Mo stated.
Obi concluded by drawing parallels to other nations that have experienced civil wars, emphasising the need to move beyond the past and build a better future.
“People need to be closer to PO to truly understand how forgiving and loving he is,” Dr. Mo concluded.
This clarification comes amidst intense scrutiny and criticism of Obi’s remarks. The incident has highlighted the ongoing sensitivity surrounding the Biafran War and its impact on Nigerian society.
