Peter Obi Calls For Road Infrastructure Prioritisation After Grueling Journey
Onitsha, THE NEWSHAUS – Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has once again lamented the deplorable state of Nigerian roads, highlighting his recent arduous journey from Onitsha in Anambra State to Anyigba in Kogi State.
The journey, which should have taken approximately three and a half hours, stretched into over seven hours due to the dilapidated state of the road.
Obi, who detailed his experience on his verified X account, expressed frustration over the route through Obollo Afor, Otukpa Branch, Ejule, and Anyigba, describing it as “exhausting.”
Even the return journey, which took an alternate route via Ogugu and Enugu-Ezike, took over seven hours, despite departing Kogi State at 2:00 p.m. and only arriving back at 9:00 p.m. – all for a meeting lasting just 30 minutes.
This harrowing experience, according to Obi, mirrors his travel experiences across the country this year.
He recounted a trip from Calabar to Uyo in the first quarter, where a one-hour journey stretched into four hours.
A journey from Port Harcourt to Bayelsa, which he intended to complete via the East-West Road to Warri, turned into a treacherous experience. The Warri to Benin route was similarly challenging.
August saw Obi travel from Abuja to Kaduna, where he spent over two hours on the Kaduna bypass alone. The Onitsha to Benin route was no different. His recent trip from Benin to Auchi and back proved excruciating, prompting him to question the government’s priorities.
While acknowledging that the issue cannot be resolved overnight, Obi stressed the need for a “total commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian travelling public.”
He urged the government to prioritise the repair and completion of existing road infrastructure instead of launching new projects that may never be completed, further adding to the country’s growing list of abandoned projects.
Obi’s plea for focusing resources on improving existing roads and easing the burden on commuters is a poignant reminder of the daily challenges faced by Nigerians navigating their country’s crumbling infrastructure.
His detailed account of his struggles serves as a powerful call for action, urging the government to prioritise the well-being of its citizens and address this pressing issue with immediate attention.
