Moniepoint Investment Boosts STEM Education At Obafemi Awolowo University

Ile-Ife, Nigeria – Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has received a significant boost to its STEM education programme with the unveiling of the Tosin Eniolorunda Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) laboratory.

The investment, a philanthropic gesture from Moniepoint, the fintech company co-founded by OAU alumnus Tosin Eniolorunda, aims to foster technological innovation and advance STEM education in Nigeria.

The newly renovated lab, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including high-performance computers, interactive learning boards, and advanced cooling systems, provides students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge CAD/CAM technologies.

This will bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enhancing students’ preparedness for the global job market.

“This laboratory represents more than just an upgrade,” stated Tosin Eniolorunda.

“It’s part of a personal commitment to foster a generation of engineers and innovators who are not only skilled but also inspired to think critically and creatively about real-world problems.”

The need for increased investment in STEM education in Nigeria is paramount, especially considering the country’s burgeoning youth population.

A recent survey revealed that less than 25% of African students pursue STEM-related careers, highlighting the need for increased opportunities and resources.

OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing its significance in addressing the university’s infrastructural challenges.

“This laboratory will help improve and enhance a lot of things within the University for students and staff, and also drive collaboration between the academia and industry,” he said.

The new laboratory is expected to significantly impact the university’s research capabilities, enhance graduate employability, and serve as a model for STEM education facilities across Nigeria.

The commissioning ceremony drew dignitaries from within and outside the university, underscoring the importance of this investment in advancing STEM education and fostering Nigeria’s technological development.
