Legal Luminary Condemns Bill To Arm FRSC, Warns Of Escalating Violence On Roads
By Chuks Eke*
Abuja, Nigeria – Prominent legal luminary, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor has strongly condemned the proposed bill to arm the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), calling for its outright rejection by the National Assembly and all well-meaning citizens.
In a statement released to the press, Sir Ejiofor expressed deep concern over the implications of granting firearms to a civilian agency primarily tasked with traffic management.
“This attempt to militarize the FRSC poses a serious risk to public safety and threatens to escalate violence on our roads,” he stated.
Citing numerous instances of armed officials abusing their power and leading to the tragic loss of innocent lives, Sir Ejiofor argued that arming the FRSC would exacerbate the problem.
“The current situation, where FRSC checkpoints are often seen as avenues for extortion, would only worsen,” he warned.
He further argued that the psychological impact of arming road safety officials would be detrimental, creating an environment of fear and intimidation.
“The FRSC’s role is to guide, educate, and enforce traffic regulations peacefully, not to incite violence,” Sir Ejiofor emphasized.
Instead of pursuing the bill, he urged the government to invest in modern technology, improved training, and enhanced coordination with security agencies to address the root causes of insecurity.
“The focus should be on making our roads safe, not battlefields,” he concluded, urging lawmakers and elected leaders to prioritize pressing issues facing the nation.
