EU Climate Month Kicks Off In Nigeria Ahead of COP29
Abuja, Nigeria – The European Union (EU) has launched a series of events in Nigeria to mark its Climate Month, just ahead of the upcoming COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, next month.
This initiative, themed “Opportunities for Growing Green Together,” underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering sustainability through collaborative climate action.
The Climate Month events, organized under the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, aim to highlight opportunities for innovation, green growth, and shared climate responsibility between the EU, Nigeria, and other key stakeholders.
The Global Gateway focuses on investing in sustainable infrastructure projects worldwide, with specific emphasis in Nigeria on sectors such as energy, transport, digitalization, agriculture/climate-smart value chains, and health and education.
Green Bond Stakeholder Dialogue: This event brought together European investors and Nigerian public and private entities to explore green bond market opportunities in anticipation of the EU Global Green Bonds Initiative, expected to generate €15-20 billion in green investments.

EU-Nigeria Climate and Energy Dialogue: This dialogue addressed key issues such as Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), energy transition, carbon pricing, emission monitoring, and the upcoming COP29.
Nigeria Methane Emissions Reduction Programme: This program focuses on building capacity for measuring and monitoring methane emissions from the oil & gas sector, agriculture, and waste.
A dedicated workshop will bring together stakeholders from the oil and gas sector to address methane emissions, which contribute to ozone layer depletion, climate change, and health risks.
Training of Nigeria’s Climate Negotiators for COP29: This training aims to enhance the negotiation skills and knowledge of Nigerian climate leaders and advocates.

Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP) III and Get.Invest Programs: These programs will launch the third phase of NESP, providing comprehensive support for the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector in Nigeria, and introduce the Get.Invest initiative to develop the renewable energy investment pipeline.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel Event: This event promotes decarbonization in the aviation sector by encouraging the use of sustainable fuels, such as biofuels, instead of conventional fossil fuels.
“EU Climate Month reflects our deep commitment to driving sustainable solutions in partnership with Nigeria,” said Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.
“Each event is an opportunity to share knowledge and best practices, and inspire innovation in tackling climate challenges. Our goal is to foster lasting, impactful change through collaboration, empowering both Nigeria and the EU to grow green together.”
The EU Climate Month in Nigeria serves as a stepping stone towards achieving the ambitious goals of the Global Gateway Strategy and COP29, highlighting the EU’s commitment to working with Nigeria to build a more sustainable future.
