Gusau, Zamfara State – The Zamfara Concerned Citizens Group has launched a scathing critique of Governor Dauda Lawal and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of prioritising political gains over the safety and security of the people.

The group claims the government is failing to adequately address the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara, specifically citing a lack of substantial effort to tackle banditry.

They point to neighbouring Sokoto State as a model, highlighting its proactive support for the military with vehicles, motorcycles, and other resources.

“The government can no longer hide its shame for its lack of contribution,” the group declared in a statement, accusing the PDP of reluctance to fully cooperate with security agencies due to alleged involvement in illegal mining.

The group further criticized the PDP’s attacks on former Governor Bello Matawalle for his visits to Sokoto, arguing that Sokoto’s government has contributed more significantly to supporting military operations than the current Zamfara administration.

“Despite these successes, the PDP has accused Matawalle of engaging in ‘eye service’ while many citizens view his actions as vital to achieving lasting peace in the region,” the statement read.

The group highlighted Matawalle’s successes in targeting and eliminating high-profile bandit leaders like Baleri Fakai, Halilu Sububu, and Kachallah Sani Black, along with the neutralisation of over 5,000 associates.

They accused Governor Lawal and the PDP of downplaying these achievements and politicising the issue of security, particularly after the death of Halilu Sububu.

Furthermore, the group alleges that Governor Lawal has connections to illegal mining activities in the state.

They urged citizens to remain vigilant and not be misled by political leaders prioritizing personal interests over the safety of the people.

The statement concluded with a plea for the state government to prioritize security and adopt a more collaborative approach to ensure the safety of citizens.

They also urged the PDP to put aside political rivalries and acknowledge Matawalle’s contributions to stabilizing Zamfara.
