Super Eagles’ 20-Hour Ordeal in Libya: A Nightmarish Journey Of Intimidation, Disrespect
The eagerly awaited Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya has been overshadowed by a harrowing 20-hour ordeal endured by the Nigerian national team on Libyan soil.
The Super Eagles’ journey, which began with a chartered flight from Uyo, was marred by a series of inexplicable and shocking events orchestrated by the Libyan authorities.
A Chain of Unforeseen Events:
The saga began with a sudden change of landing destination. Despite having all necessary documents and clearance, the pilot was forced to land at the remote Al-Abraq International Airport instead of Benghazi, a decision attributed to “higher authorities.”
The poorly equipped airport offered a stark contrast to international standards, with inadequate facilities and a palpable lack of hospitality.
Unwelcoming Reception and Neglect:
The Nigerian delegation, comprising players, officials, and dignitaries, faced a series of humiliating and disrespectful encounters.
Upon arrival, they were subjected to curt behavior by airport staff, delayed luggage retrieval, and a complete absence of any welcoming gesture from the Libyan Football Federation.
Attempts to communicate with the LFF General Secretary proved futile, leaving the delegation stranded and uncertain of their fate.
Intentional Delay and Intimidation Tactics:
The night stretched into an agonizing ordeal. The delegation was held captive at the airport, denied basic amenities like food and water, and isolated from any form of communication.
The Libyan authorities, citing a fabricated incident in Nigeria, insisted on a 10-hour delay, further fueling tensions and suspicion.
Escalating Frustration and Fear:
The lack of communication, the absence of basic necessities, and the relentless delays caused mounting frustration and anxiety among the players and officials.
The team’s mental and physical wellbeing deteriorated, culminating in concerns about their ability to compete in the match due to exhaustion and fatigue.
A Call for Accountability:
The NFF President, Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau, condemned the Libyan authorities’ actions, describing them as “despicable” and “unbecoming of the beautiful game.”
He expressed deep disappointment at the complete disregard for sporting etiquette and the blatant disrespect shown towards the Nigerian team.
CAF and FIFA’s Intervention:
The NFF has officially lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), demanding an investigation and appropriate sanctions against the Libyan Football Federation.
The incident has also caught the attention of FIFA, with Nigeria’s FIFA Council Member, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, being briefed on the situation.
A Shadow Cast on the Qualifying Match:
The Super Eagles’ 20-hour ordeal in Libya has cast a dark shadow over the anticipated qualifying match. The incident has highlighted the importance of upholding the integrity and spirit of sportsmanship, raising concerns about the potential impact on future international events and the role of sporting bodies in ensuring the safety and well-being of participating teams.
The Future of the Match:
The fate of the Nigeria-Libya qualifying match remains uncertain, pending CAF’s decision. The NFF has requested the match be postponed, citing the traumatic experiences and the team’s current state.
This incident has sparked a debate on the responsibilities of host nations and the need for stricter protocols to ensure the safety and security of visiting teams.
A Reminder of the Power of Sport:
Despite the harrowing ordeal, the Nigerian national team remains committed to representing their country. The Super Eagles’ resilience and determination in the face of adversity serve as a reminder of the unifying power of sport and the importance of promoting sportsmanship and respect both on and off the field.
