Unmarked Helicopters Stir Fear In Obuama, Rivers State
Obuama, Rivers State – A wave of unease has swept through the usually tranquil community of Obuama, Rivers State, following the appearance of unmarked helicopters flying low over the home of prominent Niger Delta leader, Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari.
The first sightings occurred on Saturday, during the local government elections, with two unmarked helicopters carrying armed personnel observed hovering over Obuama and Dokubo-Asari’s residence. The appearance of another helicopter on Sunday has only amplified anxieties.
Dokubo-Asari, a staunch advocate for resource control and minority rights, is a significant figure in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. His role as leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and his vocal support for the Ijaw people have earned him both admiration and scrutiny. Notably, he is also a close friend of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Residents, particularly the elderly, have voiced their apprehension at the unusual activity. With Obuama historically a peaceful town and home to an army formation, the unmarked helicopters have ignited fears of an unknown threat.
“We are living in fear, not knowing what these helicopters are here for,” lamented Mrs. Blessing Ebenezer, a 65-year-old resident. “We can’t sleep at night, thinking something terrible might happen.”
Echoing these sentiments, community leader Chief Barr. Opuene expressed, “The presence of these unmarked helicopters is unsettling. We urge authorities to investigate and reassure us of our safety.”
Comrade Preye Harrison, a youth leader who first reported the incident, stated, “Obuama has always been peaceful. These mysterious helicopters are causing unnecessary tension. We demand answers.”
The absence of information from authorities regarding the origin and purpose of the flights has only further intensified concerns.
The situation necessitates immediate investigation to determine the identity of the helicopter operators and their intentions.
Failing to address the growing anxiety of the community could potentially lead to further unrest in Obuama.
