Super Eagles Soar Past Libya In AFCON Qualifier Thriller
AUyo, Nigeria – The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in their third African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The match was a tense affair, with Libya employing a defensive strategy that frustrated the Eagles for much of the game.
However, a late goal from midfielder Dele-Bashiru in the 86th minute proved to be the difference, securing a vital three points for Nigeria.
This victory sees Nigeria remain unbeaten in the qualifying campaign, with two wins and one draw.
The win also puts the Super Eagles on top of Group D with seven points.
Super Eagles Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen expressed his relief following the hard-fought victory. “Emotions were high, and when the goal came, it was a huge relief,” said Eguavoen.
He acknowledged the team’s missed opportunities, stating that the Libyan team’s defensive tactics hindered their scoring ability.
“We were a bit slow in the first half, but the boys picked up in the second half and ball circulation became faster,” he added.
Despite the victory, Eguavoen admitted that the team needs to improve, particularly in their attacking prowess.
He promised to re-strategise and bring a more formidable team to the return match in Libya on Tuesday.
Super Eagles Captain William Ekong assured the Uyo fans that the team will qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
“The players will be more clinical in their approach to the match in Libya,” Ekong said, signalling a shift in focus for the team’s upcoming away fixture.
With this crucial victory, the Super Eagles have taken a significant step towards qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
The return match in Libya will be a key test for Nigeria as they look to secure their place in the continental showpiece.
