NEDC Unveils E-Mobility Project For Northeast, Aims To Mitigate Fuel Subsidy Impact
Maiduguri, Nigeria – The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced an ambitious plan to introduce electric vehicles (e-mobility) for commercial purposes across all six states of the Northeast region.
This initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is intended to alleviate the hardships faced by residents due to the recent removal of fuel subsidies.
The project, which will be implemented in phases, will provide electric tricycles, taxis, and buses for intra- and inter-state transportation, thereby reducing dependence on gasoline and petrol.
“This e-mobility project is a strategic response to the economic realities of the region,” said Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, NEDC Managing Director/CEO, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri.
“It will not only offer a more sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation but also create job opportunities and contribute to economic growth.”
The NEDC will work in collaboration with a Joint State Committee comprising representatives from all six states (Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and Borno) to finalize the project’s implementation details.
The e-mobility vehicles will be offered on loan with flexible terms and conditions determined by the Joint Committee.
Furthermore, the NEDC has pledged its support to Al Ansar University in Maiduguri, promising to consider the university’s requests for educational facilities, mobility provision, solar energy systems, ICT infrastructure, and research funding.
The commission is known for its commitment to supporting tertiary institutions in the region as part of its mission to enhance the educational sector.
As a further step towards community engagement, the NEDC has requested a proposal from Al Ansar FM 96.1 Radio Station for a retainership on certain radio programs, particularly those broadcasted in local languages. This move aims to reach a broader audience and ensure effective communication regarding the NEDC’s initiatives.
The NEDC’s e-mobility project is widely anticipated to bring about significant improvements in the Northeast region, promoting sustainable development, economic growth, and a cleaner environment.
