NDDC Launches Flood Awareness Campaign In Imo State

Owerri, Imo State – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched a one-day sensitisation and enlightenment campaign in Imo State to mitigate the impact of the upcoming flood season in the Niger Delta region.

According to a statement signed by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director, Corporate Affairs, the campaign held in Owerri demonstrates the NDDC’s commitment to protecting communities from the devastating effects of flooding.

Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu, Imo State Representative on the NDDC Board, emphasised the importance of raising awareness and providing education to help reduce flood damage.

“The impact of floods is significant, causing damage to our economy and livelihoods,” Dr. Uchegbu stated. “However, with the right information and preparation, we can mitigate the effects.

This campaign is an important step towards providing our communities with the information they need to stay safe.”

Mrs. Chinyere Umeh, Director of the NDDC Directorate of Community and Rural Development, emphasised the importance of preventative measures.

“Flooding is a force majeure, but with the right knowledge, we can mitigate its impact,” she said. “This sensitisation program will prepare residents to take appropriate action in the event of a flood.”

The campaign is in response to repeated warnings from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) about the possibility of flooding in the Niger Delta region.

Mr. Chidi Ogundu, a NEMA representative, blamed the increased risk of flooding on heavy rainfall and storms caused by climate change.

“Prevention, mitigation, and preparedness are critical to effective response and recovery,” he emphasised.
