Labour Party Officially Withdraws From Anambra LG Elections, Citing Electoral Act Violations
The Labour Party (LP) has officially announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Anambra State local government elections, which are scheduled for September 28, 2024.
Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, announced the party’s boycott, citing violations of the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution.
The National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has endorsed the Anambra State Executive Committee, led by Chief Ugochukwu Emeh (Chairman) and Okoli Akrika Esq. (Secretary).
This committee has been outspoken in its opposition to the elections, citing irregularities and legal issues with the process.
The national leadership has also confirmed that they will not be participating in the elections and have not sponsored any candidates.
Senator Usman’s statement emphasises that the party is actively pursuing legal challenges to the proposed elections through two lawsuits, “A/265/2024 Labour Party vs Anambra State House of Assembly” and “FHC/CV/AWK/223/2024 Labour Party vs ANSIEC + 14 others.”
Furthermore, the statement clarifies that the National Caretaker Committee has not formed caretaker committees in any state, including Anambra.
This reiterates that the current state executive committee, led by Chief Emeh and Okoli Akrika, is the official leadership of the Labour Party in Anambra State.
This withdrawal is a significant step by the Labour Party, demonstrating its commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process.
The party’s focus on legal challenges, as well as its refusal to participate in elections deemed irregular, demonstrate its opposition to electoral malpractice and commitment to maintaining the electoral system’s integrity.
