Bayelsa State On High Alert As Preparations For Expected Flooding Intensify

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State –  Following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMeT) prediction of widespread flooding across the country, the Bayelsa State Government issued a directive requiring immediate and comprehensive preparations to mitigate potential flood risks.

During the 138th State Executive Council meeting, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo emphasised the urgency of the situation, citing Bayelsa’s unique geographical position as the final outlet for River Niger and Benue River waters flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo directed the Ministry of Environment and the State Environmental Sanitation Authority to prioritise the clearing and opening of natural water canals to ensure smooth water flow and prevent avoidable flooding.

The Deputy Governor also urged citizens to avoid dumping waste indiscriminately in drainage and water channels, emphasising the importance of preventing flooding and environmental pollution.

He stated, “While it is natural, as citizens, we must take steps to ensure our drainages are cleared and refrain from dumping refuse on them.”

Senator Ewhrudjakpo expressed satisfaction with the State Emergency Management Agency’s preparedness and urged local government councils to support the state’s efforts by implementing measures to alleviate people’s suffering in the event of flooding.

The Deputy Governor thanked security agencies for their commitment to maintaining security while facilitating investments and socioeconomic activities in Bayelsa.

He also thanked Bayelsans for their continued support of the Governor Douye Diri-led Prosperity Government, and invited them to join the state’s annual thanksgiving service on November 2nd, 2024.
