Korean Film Festival Returns To Nigeria After COVID-19 Hiatus!
Abuja, Nigeria – The Korean Film Festival has returned to Nigeria after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, much to the delight of Korean cinema fans.
The 12th edition of the festival, held at Abuja’s Silverbird Cinema from September 19th to 21st, featured a lineup of captivating films showcasing the best of Korean storytelling.
Kim Pankyu, the Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, emphasised the strong cultural ties between South Korea and Nigeria during the opening ceremony.
“We share a passion for music and dance,” he said, highlighting Korean culture’s growing popularity in Nigeria.
“Fashion, cuisine, and especially music and dramas are deeply ingrained in Nigerian society.”
Ambassador Kim emphasised the significance of introducing Korean films to Nigeria, a country known for its thriving film industry.
“The global success of ‘Squid Game’ and the popularity of ‘Alchemy of Souls’ on Netflix Nigeria in 2022 highlight the growing appetite for Korean content,” he added.
Mr. Obi Asika, Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, echoed the sentiment, acknowledging Nigerians’ widespread love of K-pop and K-drama.
“Millions of Nigerians have fallen in love with Korean entertainment,” he said, emphasising Nigeria’s desire to learn from Korean expertise in order to improve its own entertainment industry.
The Korean Film Festival demonstrated the growing cultural exchange between South Korea and Nigeria, providing a platform for both countries to learn and share their love of film and entertainment.
As Korean cinema gains traction around the world, the festival’s return represents a bright future for cultural collaboration between the two countries.
