Nigerian Government Deploys Experts To Mitigate Borno State Flood Disaster
The Nigerian Government has sent a team of experts to Borno State to assist in mitigating the devastating effects of the recent flooding.
The disaster, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has left over 30 people dead, 23,000 homes destroyed, and over 414,000 displaced.
The flooding has also severely damaged critical infrastructure, including bridges, roads, power systems, healthcare facilities, and schools, impacting the livelihoods of approximately one million people.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, announced the deployment of the expert team during a condolence visit to the state last week.
He emphasised the urgent need for a coordinated response to address the environmental challenges arising from the flood.
The team, comprised of specialists from various environmental agencies, will focus on:
- Continuous water sampling and testing: This will help to identify sources of contamination and ensure the safety of drinking water.
- Proactive measures to prevent waterborne diseases: The team will work to prevent outbreaks of cholera and other diseases by promoting proper sanitation and hygiene practices.
- Development of flood mitigation strategies and early warning mechanisms: The ministry will collaborate with the Borno State government to prevent future flooding events.
The minister also announced that 100 drums of chlorine have been sent to the state to disinfect water sources, and 30,000 flyers will be distributed to raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene.
He commended the efforts of Borno Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, in providing aid to the affected communities.
The Federal Government’s immediate response and commitment to long-term solutions offer hope for the people of Borno State as they begin the difficult process of recovery.
