Borno Flood: Nigerian Red Cross Calls For Urgent Donations, Assistance As It Battles Humanitarian Crisis
The Nigerian Red Cross has requested urgent donations and other assistance for the victims of the devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Heavy flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city submerged more than half of the city and displaced thousands of residents, according to Nigerian Red Cross volunteers.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has quickly mobilised resources to provide immediate humanitarian aid to affected communities. The flooding, described by eyewitnesses as the worst since 1994, has affected many communities, disrupting businesses, school activities, and daily life in Borno State’s capital.
Because of the magnitude of the humanitarian needs, the Nigerian Red Cross is urgently seeking donations to support its response to the devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State. Volunteers are currently assisting affected individuals in finding safe places to stay and offering critical psychosocial support.

Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, has called on Nigerians to respond immediately to avoid a humanitarian crisis.
“As we continue to provide aid and comfort to those in need, the Nigerian Red Cross Society strongly requests additional assistance from the public, private sector, and international community. The scope of this disaster necessitates a comprehensive response to ensure that all affected people receive the assistance they require.”

It is a challenging time. We are doing everything we can to provide relief and restore hope to the affected communities, but the scale of this crisis necessitates collaborative action.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with local authorities and other humanitarian partners, has sent emergency response teams to the most affected areas.
According to Dr. Abubakar Kende, Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, our teams are providing critical support, including:
First Aid Services: Medical teams are on the ground providing first aid and healthcare to those
Injured or in need of medical treatment. Children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions are among the most vulnerable groups.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene services: To prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, our teams are distributing water purification tablets and educating affected communities on the best hygiene practices for emergencies.
Emergency Shelters: The NRCS is collaborating with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to establish temporary shelters and distribute essential relief supplies to displaced families, such as clean water, food, and non-food items.
Psychosocial Support: Recognising the trauma experienced by flood victims, the NRCS offers
Psychosocial support to assist individuals and families in coping with the emotional and psychological effects of the disaster.
We stand in solidarity with those affected by the floods in various areas of Borno state. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, been displaced, or lost their property as a result of the floods.
