TSF Hails Tinubu’s Re-election As ECOWAS Chairman, Says It’s Pivotal Moment For West Africa
The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) described President Bola Tinubu’s re-election as chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as a watershed moment in West African diplomacy and governance history.
On Thursday in Abuja, the group issued a statement signed by its Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Josiah Afolabi, stating that the crucial moment for the development of democracy was the unanimous vote of confidence in the President’s democratic credentials recorded in the previous year.
The TSF stated, “This exceptional vote of confidence underscores the region’s trust in Tinubu’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to fostering economic integration and political stability among member states.”
“To be clear, the chairmanship of ECOWAS has traditionally been rotated annually among member states in order to ensure equitable representation and balanced leadership.”
However, re-election of a chairman, while uncommon, is not unprecedented. It demonstrates exemplary stewardship.
“We recall that Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso served as chairman in 1990 and again in 2011, demonstrating the trust and respect earned through effective leadership.
Tinubu’s re-election places him in a distinguished lineage of leaders whose rule has been deemed worthy of continuation.
“During Tinubu’s first term, ECOWAS significantly strengthened its initiatives aimed at regional security and economic integration.
His diplomatic skills were instrumental in mediating political crises, as evidenced by his efforts to navigate the complexities of Guinea-Bissau’s political transition, for example.
“His proactive approach to promoting economic collaboration resulted in the strengthening of intra-regional trade agreements, laying a solid foundation for long-term development.
“As President Tinubu embarks on his renewed mandate in the sub-region, we are confident that his strategic vision will guide ECOWAS through the region’s numerous challenges.
“With a focus on improving security cooperation, strengthening economic resilience, and advancing social development, Tinubu’s leadership promises a prosperous and stable future for West Africa.” His plan includes novel policies to combat insurgency, grow digital economies, and strengthen public health systems against future pandemics.
“For us, Tinubu’s re-election is a beacon of continuity and hope for ECOWAS because it represents a collective resolve to use the strength of unity and collaboration to address common challenges.”
TSF also urged member states to unite behind President Tinubu in order to achieve a common vision of peace, prosperity, and progress.
