Carpenter Explains How He Handled N200m Project, Stresses Importance Of Acquiring Skills
Nelson Emmanuel Okafor, a 26-year-old carpenter from Anambra, has spoken out about the many opportunities to learn crafts and skills, particularly carpentry.
Carpenterway’s CEO also addressed Japa syndrome, advising young people to look beyond white-collar jobs as the only path to success in life.
In a statement to INDEPENDENT, the young entrepreneur challenged Nigerian youths to be humble enough to pursue any profession, no matter how ugly or unappealing it is.
Nelson advised them to use the same brain they used to defraud people to consider how to learn and improve their skills to make a living.
He also stated that there is “dignity in labour, especially in recent years where fraud has become the norm.”
“If there is one thing that young people should learn from me, it is that there is dignity in work, especially in this day and age when fraud is rampant. It is like the most sought-after job description for any young person right now.”
“There is dignity in labour, and instead of jumping into fraud, use the same brain you want to use to scam someone to consider how to learn skills, improve your skills, and earn an honest living from them.
“My foray into carpentry has taught me a lot, but one thing stands out: no matter how ugly the job is or how unappealing the profession, you can make a lot of money doing whatever you want as long as you have the dexterity in that particular field.
“No matter what you do, and depending on how much time and effort you put into it, you can earn as much, if not more, than those who do the cleanest jobs.
“I managed an interior project worth more than $200 million. I have an advantage over other carpenters and interior designers because I am educated, and as an interior designer, I am more than just a designer; I also have artisan skills.
“First and foremost, I am a carpenter who had to learn the skill for a few years before becoming a certified interior designer, which gives me an advantage over regular interior designers who only get to direct or supervise projects.”
“For me, if I discover that someone is not doing the job correctly, I must do it myself, and because I am young, this helps to expedite the entire process. I am also very innovative, and I do not limit myself to what is around me.
“My work is world-class, and I learn from many industry veterans and incorporate their ideas into what I do. I recruit my peers, and it makes jobs go much more smoothly, quickly, and innovatively.
When asked if he had ever considered quitting his job, Nelson said it was too late because he had progressed too far in the profession.
He went on to say, “I believe there was a lot of doubt and discouragement in the early stages of the business, but we are now knee-deep in the process and it is too late to give up.
“Also, we have built a structure, and on days when I am too frustrated with everything going on, I simply take a break, and the company continues to run under the structure that has been erected. It is a valid emotion, but it should not hold anyone back as long as it is something they are passionate about.”
On where he found strength to keep going, especially during his darkest times,… said, “It is God who gives us the power to make wealth. I draw strength from God.
“It is as if there is always something weighing you down, and once you get through one challenge, there is another one waiting for you.
“To be honest, God is my only source of strength, and I try to maintain a good relationship with Him because I do not engage in any fetish or diabolic activities.
“When it becomes too much for me, I simply take a break, and when I am mentally refreshed, I return and continue moving, but giving up is never an option. When things get too much, I just disappear and unwind, only to return better than before.”
