The Rwanda High Commission in Nigeria recently commemorated the 30th anniversary of its liberation, known as Kwibohora 30.

The weekend celebration was a watershed moment in Rwandan history, symbolising the end of genocide and the defeat of the oppressive regime that perpetrated it on July 4, 1994.

This year’s theme, “Rwanda’s Journey Continues,” represents the ongoing efforts to promote national reconciliation, justice, economic prosperity, and social development.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, stated that his country has made remarkable progress in many areas, but that the journey to build a prosperous and united nation is still ongoing.

He did, however, reflect on Rwanda’s challenges following its independence on July 1, 1962.

He stated, “While we recognise our independence day on July 1, Kwibohora, July 4 holds a deeper significance for Rwandans because it represents the day we reclaimed our nation, our dignity, and our right to chart our own path.

“We honour the Rwandan people’s resilience and the Rwandan Patriotic Army’s bravery, emphasising their sacrifices in the fight for freedom and peace.
“We thank those who fought for Rwanda’s liberation and remember the heroes who gave their lives for a free and united Rwanda.

He went on to say that true liberation entails healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding, stating that “Rwanda’s innovative approach to justice, including initiatives like the Gacaca courts and the “Ndi Umunyarwanda” programme, has played a critical role in healing the wounds of the past and fostering national unity.”

“Today, Rwanda is stronger and more united than ever. Significant progress has been made towards reducing poverty, increasing access to healthcare and education, and empowering women.

“With an impressive annual economic growth rate of 7%, Rwanda has emerged as an important investment destination in Africa.

“We want to invite people to visit Rwanda via #RwandAir to experience the country’s natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and vibrant culture.

“For investors, Rwanda provides a favourable business environment and a government dedicated to promoting growth and development.”

The envoy also acknowledged the valuable collaborations with countries such as Nigeria that had contributed to Rwanda’s progress, as well as gratitude for the partnerships that had aided Rwanda’s development and emphasised the importance of strengthening those relationships for mutual benefit.

Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, praised the Rwandan people for their liberation, growth, and achievements over the last three decades.

Tuggar, who was accompanied by a director from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Safiu Olaniyan, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to improving cooperation with Rwanda and strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

During the raffle draw, which was open to all attendees, two lucky people won complimentary round-trip Economy and Business air tickets to Rwanda, with many others walking away with fantastic prizes.
