England Beat Switzerland 5-3 On Penalty To Set Up Clash With Netherlands
Following a dramatic victory over Switzerland, England advanced to the Euro 2024 semi-finals thanks to some penalty shootout success.
Bukayo Saka scored a stunning equaliser five minutes after Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead in the second half. Gareth Southgate’s side has now won two shoot-outs in his time as manager of The Three Lions, and they will now face the Netherlands.
England has reached the semi-finals of a major tournament for the third time in four years under Gareth Southgate, defeating Switzerland on penalties at Euro 2024 on a tense day in Dusseldorf.
The match was decided on penalty kicks. Jordan Pickford saved Manuel Akanji’s penalty, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to score England’s fifth penalty in the shootout and win the match.
Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead with 15 minutes remaining in normal time, but Bukayo Saka’s low, long-range drive tied the game five minutes later.
The game remained close throughout, with neither team creating many chances. Xherdan Shaqiri nearly scored directly from a corner in extra time, hitting the angle between the post and the bar.
England will face the Netherlands, who defeated Turkey 2-1, in the semi-finals at Dortmund on Wednesday night.
