Mr. Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has launched the reconstruction of the 25-kilometer Kwaita-Yebu Road in Kwali, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transforming rural infrastructure for inclusive development.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Kwali on Thursday, Wike stated that the project, worth N7 billion, is already more than half funded in the current budget.

“This is the eighth time I have visited FCT area councils regarding infrastructure projects,” Wike stated. “I visited six area councils to inaugurate road construction projects, and I was in Kwali to inaugurate a completed bridge.” I am back in Kwali today to kick off a road reconstruction project. This is a fulfilment of Tinubu’s promise to transform rural communities and provide basic infrastructure.”

The minister acknowledged that previous administrations were unable to complete the project due to a lack of funding. He has reduced the project completion timeline from 18 to 12 months, assuring Kwali residents of timely completion and renewing their faith in governance.

Wike emphasised that the Tinubu-led administration would not ignore rural residents, who account for a large proportion of electoral votes. Aside from road projects, school rehabilitation is underway, with contracts for another 20 schools set to be awarded soon.

Wike praised former Sen. Philip Aduda for remaining connected to his constituents despite losing reelection in 2023, and urged him to continue his involvement. “I will work with those who work with people and connect with them,” he said.

Mr. Danladi Chiya, Chairman of the Kwali Area Council, praised Wike’s rural infrastructure transformation agenda, pointing out that the road had been in disrepair for more than a decade.

He emphasised that the reconstruction would significantly improve mobility and productivity in the affected communities.

Mr. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department, stated that the project would open rural communities, satellite towns, and FCT area councils.

“For the record, this is the seventh inauguration of rural projects across the six area councils since Wike took office as Minister of the FCT 11 months ago,” he said.

Mr. Luka Nizassan, Kwali’s traditional leader and Etsu, expressed confidence that the project would not be abandoned and would be completed within the 18-month time frame promised.

He recounted previous challenges, noting that the road was initially awarded in 2005 but experienced multiple contractor abandonments, leading to a loss of hope among the people.

“The road, if completed, will ease transportation and boost economic activity in the area by connecting Kwali Area Council to Abaji and Kuje Area Councils, as well as Nasarawa State,” Nizassan said.
