Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and some South East senators have urged President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra.

The Senators issued the appeal following a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN.

Following the meeting with the AGF, Abaribe told the press that unless Kanu is released, socioeconomic and political activities in the South East region will remain stagnant.

The former Abia state deputy governor told reporters that they were at the AGF’s office to deliver a letter to President Tinubu pleading with him to release Kanu so that he could advance to the presidency.

Abaribe stated that the call for Kanu’s release is urgent due to the deteriorating state of the economy and social life in the South East as a result of the Federal Government’s detention of the IPOB leader.

Senator Abaribe hinted that he had already met with Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja and agreed to any conditions for release.

The Senator expressed concern that Kanu’s peaceful agitation had been hijacked by unscrupulous elements and criminals, resulting in the avoidable deaths of innocent people, security personnel, and others.

Senator Abaribe expressed confidence that Kanu’s release would alleviate the heightened tension and insecurity that has gripped the South East region since 2021.

As a result, Abaribe and his fellow senators urged the AGF to convey their message to President Tinubu, pleading for Kanu’s release.

The lawmakers also asked the AGF to use his position to withdraw the federal government’s charges against Kanu.

Furthermore, Abaribe stated that virtually all political leaders, religious leaders, and stakeholders have unanimously agreed that Kanu must be released for the region to regain peace.

Remember that the Federal Government re-arrested Kanu in Kenya in 2021 and brought him to the country for terrorism trial.

Despite his plea of not guilty to the charges, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja refused to admit him to bail on the grounds that he is a flight risk after jumping the previous bail in which Abaribe was his surety.
