The Federal Ministry of Finance and other concerned authorities have been implored to urgently look into the plight of members of the Association of Police Contractors over non-payment of executed contracts that range from five to one hundred million naira.

In an interview with journalists, the Association’s leadership, represented by its President, Mr Steven Ogbonna, stated that their members are already living below the standard of living as Nigerian citizens due to non-payment for contracts executed for the Nigeria Police since 2010.

According to the President, the Nigeria Police awarded contracts for house and barracks renovations across the country to members of the association in 2010, which included the supply of equipment.

According to him, “We duly executed the projects because we were given a time limit to complete the tasks.” Some were to be delivered in twelve weeks, while others in eight.

“We had a lot of faith in the Nigeria Police because we had worked for them for years without any payment delays.”

The President stated that they never expected how things would turn out because they took loans to complete some of the projects, and that they went to the sites, worked so hard, and delivered without jeopardising the agreement reached with the police.

He also claimed that members of the association completed a project in 2009, with the balance of the payment still owed before the one in 2010 was awarded to them. The association’s leader stated that they had visited various Inspectors-General of Police on the subject at various times and had been subjected to several verifications by the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Auditing.

Mr. Ogbonna also stated that the Presidential Committee Initiative on Continuous Audit inherited the debt from Debt Management of Nigeria, promising to pay it off in less than six months, but the promise has yet to be fulfilled.

He described one of their experiences this way: “We have been going there. We have staged various protests but have never been paid.”

Ogbonna explained that the committee put in place conducted an investigation and confirmed that they were legally authorised to carry out the projects.

He therefore urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other relevant authorities to expedite action on getting the money paid, claiming that some of the members are starving or dying.
