UN Condemns Suicide Attacks On Gwoza
The United Nations has strongly condemned the suicide bombings targeting civilians in Borno State’s Gwoza Local Government Area.
The United Nations said in a statement that Saturday’s attacks on the Borno town killed and injured many people.
The statement stated: “The exact number of people killed and injured is unknown, but it appears that dozens of people have been killed and others seriously injured.”
“On June 29, members of a non-state armed group allegedly attacked a wedding party in Gwoza town using a person-borne improvised explosive device. The attack reportedly killed dozens of people, including children, women, and men. According to reports, two more attacks occurred later that day.
In a statement, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mohamed Fall, said: “I am horrified by this attack on civilian populations and strongly condemn such acts.” I stand in solidarity with Nigeria’s government, as well as the families and communities of those affected.
“On behalf of the United Nations, I urge all parties to the conflict to fulfil their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.
“I have reached out to the Borno State Government to express my condolences and offer any assistance that the United Nations and the humanitarian community can provide to the victims of the attack.”
